What Will The Name Be?

Exploring names & colors

For a long time, my project has not had a name. This week, through typographical explorations and sketches on my process journal, I decided on two names that alluded to different important aspects of my project.

The name DivEdCo, comes from a graphic design workshop where the most important Puerto Rican graphic designer worked, Lorenzo Homar. The name of this workshop was an abbreviation for "Division of Education for the Community" and with that, it was a graphic design workshop with the purpose of spreading important information in Puerto Rican communities. The DivEdCo is responsible for some very important pieces that make up the brief and somewhat disorganized graphic design history of the island. This name would draw from the history of graphic design on the island but it is also a reference that not many Puerto Ricans are aware of so it would make the brand harder for people to relate to.

The idea of naming the project “Olvido” comes from the fact that many of the historical stories I wish to highlight through my work are stories that have been forgotten. Through my sketches in my process journal and thinking about what I want this project to mean, I realized that one of the most impactful aspects of shinning a light on Puerto Rican history is the way that it has been purposefully forgotten and not preserved. The word “Olvido” is Spanish for “a void of the forgotten”.

My typographic explorations are done with typography that specifically comes from Latin American designers as I want this project to highlight these voices in all aspects possible. The type I am using for the explorations came from Latinotype Foundry, Typefolio, TypoType, Sudtipos, Plau, and César Puertas.

My color explorations come from the colors of Puerto Rico. I was inspired by the 1990s commercial "Los Colores de Mi Tierra" which is a hit in Puerto Rico and many people still remember it. The name of the commercial translates to "The colors of my land". I've pulled imagery of the flora that grows on the island. My initial idea for the project is to have it be very colorful, engaging, and eye-catching. This week I explored monochromatic pallets with blues, yellows, and greens as these are the colors that most flood Puerto Rican landscape and flora.
